This occurs when the lens inside the eye loses some of its flexibility so that it becomes difficult to focus on close objects.

Presbyopia is the result of the eye’s ageing process and affects everyone from their mid-40s onwards.

Presbyopes need glasses for reading, and sometimes for ‘intermediate’ distances. If already long-sighted or short-sighted, a different strength of lens is needed for close work compared to that for long distance. The different prescriptions can be combined into a single pair of varifocals, lenses which blend gradually from distance vision at the top down to reading vision at the bottom – far more convenient than swapping between separate pairs of single vision glasses.

Everyone’s vision changes over time and you may experience one or more of the above conditions. That is why it is important to have regular eye examinations.
